Synopsis:

A baroque entertainment with one foot in silent cinema and the other gingerly toeing the sound waves, the film centers on a man who, in visiting the now-emptied foundling home, journeys deep into his childhood. There, amid secrets and lies, open wounds and monstrous parental narcissism, he discovers what made him tick and why, and how between his mother's terrifying love and his father's sadism he learned all the cruel tricks of desire. Mr. Maddin's adoration for early cinema in particular, its delicate charms and now-exotic flourishes hasn't made him a slave to that love, which is why the delirious, ingenious, often very funny and strangely touching film 'Brand Upon the Brain!' is as much deconstruction as a tribute

Guy Maddin reluctantly returns to his childhood home, an abandoned Canadian island, where his parents ran an orphanage. As Guy fulfills his dying mother's request to paint the lighthouse which served as the orphanage, memories of strange events there overpower him. An undercover investigation by child author/detective Wendy & a revolt by the repressed children, blew open a cover-up by Guy's parents. Wendy disguised herself as her brother Chance and discovered that Maddin's inventor father performed outré scientific experiments on the orphans.

Silent film with orchestra accompaniment. Guy Maddin arrives to his childhood home by rowboat following his dying mother's wish that he should repaint the lighthouse. He revisits a fictionalised childhood trauma in which he lives on a mysterious island with his parents and older sister, and a horde of orphans who bear strange scars.
