Synopsis:

A poetic coming of age love story with a touch of black comedy. 17-year-old Jon is more than surprised when Edith, the beautiful shopkeeper's daughter, asks for help with a very private sexual matter. Jon agrees to help - maybe because she's blind and just as much an outsider as he is. You see, Jon is blamed for everything that goes wrong in this sleepy little town, be it a sick animal or even the bus driver's hiccups. Everybody says it was Jon's fault that the town's very first traffic light was ruined eight years ago and just like that, the wheels of progress came grinding to a halt here. Jon's father is the first to remind him of this in an attempt to keep Jon from growing up. But there's no stopping puberty and Jon is determined to help Edith on her way, even if it's helping her lose her virginity.

An extended voiceover prologue explains the traumatic past events that turned now-17-year-old Jon (Lukas Thorsteinsson) into an outcast, cost Jon's father (Morten Suurballe) his manhood and led to the decline of the town. Having internalized his scapegoat status, Jon now spends his days helping alcoholic veterinarian mother (Rikke Louise Andersson), spying on neighbors with Ben (Lukas Schultz), and skulking around the grocery store run by attractive blind girl Edith (Marta Holm) and her ever-smiling father (Lars Brygmann). Both fathers try in nefarious ways to hinder their children's natural adolescence. When Edith chooses Jon to help her with a private sexual matter, he discovers he suffers from a painful condition in which his foreskin doesn't fully retract. Production design reps the standout element of a solid tech package.

In the memorably peculiar, phallically stylized coming-of-ager "Skyscraper," Danish writer-director Rune Schjott pits his teen protagonist against castration anxiety, phimosis and the hatred of his entire town. A mix of horror, poetry and humor, the pic plays like a fractured fairy tale, complete with happy ending. Although not for all tastes, "Skyscraper" could soar as a cult item at further fests.
