Synopsis:
Nine-year-old Rachel Gladstein lives with her adoring parents who smother her at every turn with an abundance of love and meatballs. Rachel sleeps with her school bag every night, anticipating the freedom going back to school will bring. Concerned for her mental health Rachel's mother (Agnès Jaoui) sends her to see an eccentric child psychologist, amusingly played by Isabella Rossellini. However, it is a new school friend who breathes life into Rachel and her family. Filled with a cast of funny and peculiar characters, The Dandelions tells a coming-of-age story with the levity and absurdity befitting of two young girls. Juliette Gombert is excellent as the sweet Rachel and newcomer Anna Lemarchand gives a refreshingly energetic turn as Valérie. The cast is beautifully rounded out by buoyant performances from Denis Podalydès and Agnès Jaoui (The Taste of Others) as Rachel's parents.

Stuck between her parents, who smother her with love, and constant blunders, nine-year-old Rachel counts the minutes separating her from freedom. Until the day her path crosses that of intrepid Valérie.

Initially a sweetly entertaining Franco-Jewish family saga set in the drab 1980s, writer-director Carine Tardieu's "The Dandelions" slowly slides from dramedy into full-on drama.
