Synopsis:
A 3-disc set comprising three integral features from the most creative period of Czechoslovak cinema. Despite being made under the gaze of Government censors, these films achieved a miraculous marriage of content and form despite the most oppressive circumstances. Set includes: Diamonds of the Night (1964): Nemec's debut feature is one of the most thrilling and startlingly original works of cinema. Told almost without dialogue, it chronicles the tense and desperate journey of two teenage boys who are trying to stay alive after escaping from a German train bound for a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Intimate Lighting (1965): One of the most highly-regarded films of the 60s, Passer's wonderfully subtle comedy of provincial life concerns the dreams of two musician friends, one of whom, having left their small hometown to become successful, returns to visit the other who stayed behind to become a local music teacher. A work of great originality and universal acceptance. The Cremator (1968): Set in Prague during the Nazi occupation, this chilling mix of Dr Strangelove and Repulsion, is a pitch-black comedy of horrors featuring an outstanding performance by the great Rudolf Hrusínský as a professional cremator, for whom the political climate allows free rein to his increasingly deranged impulses for the 'salvation of the world'.

Diamonds of the Night (1964)
Diamonds in the night is the tense, brutal story of two Jewish boys who escape from a train transporting them from one concentration camp to another. Ultimately, they are hunted down by a group of old, armed home-guardists. The film goes beyond the themes of war and anti-Nazism and concerns itself with man's struggle to preserve human dignity.
Intimate Lighting (1965)
One of the most important images of the Czech New Wave 60s, which was ranked among the top ten domestic films of all time. Feature debut screenwriter and director Ivan Passer is currently his only feature-length film, which was shot in Czechoslovakia. In this original sad comedy in a small town after ten years encounter two classmates - musicians: one is a member of the regional symphony orchestra, the other made it to the director of local music school puts family villa, playing at funerals...
The Cremator (1969)
Kopfrkingl enjoys his job at a crematorium in Czechoslovakia in the late 1930s. He likes reading the Tibetan book of the dead, and espouses the view that cremation relieves earthly suffering. At a reception, he meets Reineke, with whom he fought for Austria in the first World War. Reineke convinces Kopfrkingl to emphasize his supposedly German heritage, including sending his timid son to the German school. Reineke then suggests that Kopfrkingl's half-Jewish wife is holding back his advancement in his job.
