Synopsis:
***WARNING: The Ninth Day and March of Millions DO NOT HAVE ENGLISH Language options*** The Ninth Day: In World War II, after a period living hell on earth in the concentration camp of Dachau with other catholic priests, Father Abbé Henri Kremer gets a nine-day leave to return to his home town for his mother's funeral. During this period, the SS Gestapo lieutenant Gebhardt tries to persuade Henri, who was born with a silver spoon and a member of an influential Luxembourgian family, to convince the local bishop to give up resisting to the Germans and write a letter to the Vatican in the name of the Catholic Church of Luxemburg, convincing the Pope to support Hitler and the Nazi regime. The ambivalent Henri questions himself and the bishop what he shall do. Playing for Time: In World War II, the Jewish French musician and cabaret singer Fania Fenelon Goldstein is sent by the Nazis from Paris to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. The guards take her clothing and luggage and they cut her hair very short. One day, when she is very weak, she hears someone asking whether any prisoner could sing Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly and she joins the group of musicians that have been spared from the gas chambers to entertain the Nazis performing music for them. She convinces the conductor Alma Rose to invite her friend Marianne, telling that she would be a talented singer. Along the years of abusive treatment, they survive but losing their dignity. Within the Whirlwind: Evgenia Ginzburg, a Russian Literature Professor at the University of Kazan, and her family live the privileged lives of Communist appparatchiks, with a large apartment, a new American car and a country dacha. Under Stalin?s leadership, the Communist Party undergoes a major transformation, and little by little, all intellectuals, engineers and academics are interrogated by the secret police. Evgenia is suspected of membership in a Trotskyist organization. While enduring various sophisticated psychological tortures, she finds herself facing outrageously trumped-up charges. Unwilling to denounce anyone, she is sentenced to 10 years of hard labor. For Evgenia, it is the beginning of a long, painful journey into the Gulag camp system, where she survives only because of her love to a German camp doctor. March of Millions: In 1944 many Germans in Eastern Prussia, like Lena von Mahlenberg, daughter of a local aristocrat, believed that Hitler would surrender and spare them from being invaded by the vengeful Russian Red Army. He didn't and they had to flee. The Diary of Anne Frank: During World War II, a teenage Jewish girl named Anne Frank and her family are forced into hiding in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands.
