5 Sides of a Coin takes its viewers on a unique voyage that shows where hip-hop originated and where it has since spread in its 30+ years of existence. Unlike other hip-hop documentaries, '5 Sides' chooses to focus on each of the 5 basic elements of hip-hop in order to outline its history and its diaspora. Emcee'ing, DeeJay'ing, Breakin,' Graffiti Writing and Beatboxing are all given their own spotlight and within each section, '5 Sides' allows the pioneers, the new school, critics and experts from around the world to define each element in their own words. In an attempt to up the ante, '5 Sides' also takes on the controversies, the many misconceptions and the setbacks surrounding hip-hop today, by comparing and contrasting the various opinions of those within the culture, as well as those on the outside looking in.

Exploding the myth that Hip-Hop is merely 'Rap Music,' 5 SIDES OF A COIN is an overview of the international culture of Hip-Hop. This documentary presents Hip-Hop culture for what it really is: it's origins, diaspora and the 5 basic elements that help define it. Today, Hip-Hop is a worldwide phenomenon, a multi-billion dollar industry and unbeknown to most, a distinguished and socially relevant culture. 5 SIDES OF A COIN documents a journey that spans generations and continents, weaving together interviews and ideologies, never losing track of the pulsing beat. Featured in 5 SIDES OF A COIN are: Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc, Phase Too, Grandmaster Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore, Jazzy Jay, Gil Scott-Heron, The Crash Crew, Mercedes Ladies, Pee Wee Dance, Jo-Jo & Frosty Freeze of the Rock Steady Crew, Jurassic 5, Common, De La Soul, Prince Paul, The Beatnuts, Dilated Peoples, Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Q-Bert, Rahzel, Mix Master Mike, The Pharcyde, Michael Franti of Spearhead, The X-Ecutioners, Dan the Automator, DJ Spooky, DJ Krush, DJ Craze, DJ A-Trak, Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto & The Gorillaz, the Herbaliser, Killa Kela and many, many, more Hip-Hop artists interviewed around the world.

Think Hip-Hop is 'Rap Music?' Think Again. 'If God had to choose one religion that best articulated his intentions, he would choose hip-hop.' Aesop Rock is amongst the horde of hip-hop identities that dont mince their words in this phenomenal history lesson. Jazzy Jay, Kool Herc, De La Soul, Phase Too, Jurassic 5, Gil Scott Heron, Prince Paul, D.J. Spooky, Michael Franti, Jeru, KRS-One, Biz Markie, Cowboy, Q-Bert, Afrika Bambaataa, the X-Ecutioners, Grandmaster Flash and Rahzel are just a few on the crammed guest list who put their ten cents worth into Five Sides of a Coin.
