Two stages of a Dominican-American's life; first as a boy trying to bond with his young mother, then a 21-year-old looking for love in New York City.

Following the accidental death of his abusive mother, nine-year-old Icare, known to his friends as Courgette, is befriended by a kind police officer, Raymond, who accompanies Courgette to his new home at the local orphanage. Here he meets a group of other orphans his age but after becoming a target for bullying he struggles to adapt to his new surroundings. Regular visits from Raymond take the edge off Courgette?s unhappiness and he soon finds a way to co-exist in relative harmony with his fellow residents. When another new child named Camille arrives at the orphanage they become firm friends and Courgette has his first taste of hope and possible romance. But Courgette?s new found happiness is threatened by Camille?s aunt, who wants to take custody of her niece. (Synopsis)
