Synopsis:
Studie I: Uppvaknandet: First experimental film by Peter Weiss. Studie II: Hallucinationer: A short film comprised of twelve scenes derived from group of drawings. Studie III: Experimental short by Peter Weiss. Study No. 4: Liberation: 'Studie IV' (1955) by Peter Weiss portrays a liberation process. The main character moves between different rooms, rooms of significance for him, dragging something that constantly changes form but eventually turns out to be himself. It is an old and consumed I that disappears from him. Study V / Interplay: Study V: Interplay is constructed along the same principles as Study IV / Hallucinations. Sequences of photographic abstractions have been balanced against more realistic sections. Study V depicts a surrealistically charged encounter between two lovers, a young woman and a man. Stories in the Shadows: Experimental survey of down-and-outs in the city. The Studio of Dr. Faust: "Studio Interior" - Depicting spiritual and existential processes through Faust in his laboratory. The color film's possibilities inspired Weiss to do an experiment where the light and colors from glass prisms were allowed to play against each other. Carlo Derkert portrays the devil's emissary. Nothing unusual: Nothing unusual - About everyday life and the recurrent dangers in the big city. According to Law: This documentary short describes life in prison in Sweden. What Shall We Do Now: "What should we do now?" About young people who are trying to make something out of their lives that isn't just following in their parents' footsteps. Tagning narkomaner: In a single room, Peter Weiss has captured the environment of two drug addicts, without ever showing their faces in the film. Anna Casparsson: Anna Casparsson (1861-1961) was a Swedish visual artist, pianist and textile artist. She spent time with and was inspired by many important artists, such as Anders Zorn and Ernst Josephsson. In 1960 the Modern Museum in Stockholm dedicated an entire exhibition to Anna Casparsson, which is exposed in the documentary. The film also features an interview with Anna Casparsson recorded in 1948. Tagning Öyvind Fahlström: Uncompleted portrait of an artist. Fragmentary images from Öyvind Fahlström's studio, with paintings, collages and Fahlström's friendship gathered around a table.

Peter Weiss (1916-1982) was a celebrated German/ Swedish author and playwright, known especially for his stage play 'Marat/Sade.' His literary fame overshadowed his work as a surrealist painter and avant-garde filmmaker. Surface reality is made to yield suggestive images which become as firm, as certain and as tantalising as the object itself. The solidity of image-hallucinations, dreams, madmen's ravings-later became a recurrent feature of Weiss' work. In his surrealistic 1953 film, Hallucinations, Weiss played an intricate visual game on the interchangeability of image and reality.
