Synopsis:
*********THIS DVD'S DESCRIPTION HAS NOT BEEN FINALIZED YET********
The former British Defence Secretary turned broadcaster embarks upon a coastal walk in Devon and Cornwall, visiting places of interest and meeting local people along the way.

The film opens with a rapid survey of the early history of Cornwall, tracing
its effect on the language of the country; typical examples of Cornish
architecture are shown, and also St. Michael's Mount once both fortress and an
ecclesiastical foundation. Brief glimpses are given of Cornwall's chief
industries, tin and clay. Many of the beauty spots of the area are also shown. (Synopsis) RL.1 Shots of the Cornish coastline, waves lapping against the cliffs, the
moors, ancient stones, a Celtic cross, the castle walls of Tintagel, early
manuscripts telling of the legend of King Arthur, St. Michael's Mount
(194-210), a church surviving from the middle ages, thatched cottages, sea
beating against the rocks, fishing boats, fishermen loading the boats with
lobster pots. A drifter leaves the harbour. The catch consists mainly of
pilchards which the women pack for export. A storm is shown at sea with the
fishermen fighting against the waves. Nearly every week, a lifeboat practise
is held. The lifeboat is pulled down to the sea edge and slides into the
water. Close-ups of the fishermen rowing (439-520). Shots of the engine
houses of the tin mines. The miners go down the shafts. A charge is inserted
into the cave wall and the miners wait for the explosion (654 ft).

RL.2 Machines are shown extracting tin from waste products as it flows away
to the sea (45). Above the tin miners, farmers harvest the corn (46-88).
Another of Cornwall's industries is shown. Near St. Austell, china clay is
washed from the hard rock with high pressure hosess (89-228). Along the River
Fal, foreign freighters carry the clay to destinations all over the world.
Traditional Cornish wrestling is shown (241-300). Shots of the Saltash Bridge
which crosses the River Tamar. Tourists arrive by train. Quick shots of Loo,
Newquay, the Bay of St. Ives, the port of Mousehole. Final shots of people on
holiday - hikers, cycling, tennis, walking down to the beach, paddling,
children riding donkeys beach ball games, sitting in deckchairs, swimming,
building sandcastles, fishermen, sea-gulls in flight (1345 ft). (Shotlist)
