First as a jeweller, draughtsman and interior decorator, and then as a master glassmaker, René Lalique (1860-1945) managed to combine business acumen with artistic ability. A proponent of Art Nouveau and then Art Deco, this passionate and open-minded artist celebrated nature and women throughout his life. Lalique's works are filmed here for the first time, while his personality, magnetism and intense love-life are revealed through the recollections of his daughter Renée Lalique, his granddaughter Nicole Maritch-Haviland, and even his great-granddaughters. The works of Lalique, divided into two periods of jewellery and glass, are elucidated by Evelyne Possémé and Jean-Luc Olivié, curators at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris. Maria Fernanda Passos Leite, the curator of the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, describes the artist's relationship with his friend and patron, the oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian. In the background are period images of France, shaped by the latest technological discoveries and the rise of industrialism.
