Synopsis:

Thomas, Chris and Jacques are inseparable boyhood friends living in the Dutch countryside. Chris and Thomas both work with tulips, while Jacques dreams of wandering the world on his own. Girls are also on their minds; for Thomas, it's Manou, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. And Manou notices him, too. Idyllic as it all sounds, though, there's a darker side to the boys' youthful curiosity, as they fake death scenes for fun and rate them for creativity. One horrific night, they're involved in a freak accident-tearing apart the only real family they have, one another. Shocking Blue explores coming of age in the absence of authority. Adult influence in the boys' world is practically nonexistent; Thomas's mother habitually leaves his father, while his sister wanders the streets at night. The youths are left to their own devices without role models-and without much support as they struggle to learn how to heal. Director Mark de Cloe deftly navigates the terrain of adolescence, where life choices seem black and white. It's only as Thomas and Manou come together that reality begins to shift toward shades of gray.
