The year I turned 17, in 1993, my father died of mesothelioma, a pleural cancer caused by asbestos. From that day on, worry has never left me. I recently found his diary. And from his entries I made this film. To cut one's losses means to sacrifice what seems trivial to save what is essential. Asbestos protected from nearly everything, at a low cost, for maximum profit, which was essential. The risks to public health were known but ignored. Its massive use kept feeding a terrible fire, less immediate, less visible, insidious. This film explores a fire that can no longer be ignored. My father was only one of many victims. My worry has led me to discover the personal and very real consequences of this collective story. I wanted to study asbestos on a very personal, human level.
