A documentary from Re:Voir and Creative Arts Television on the life and work of the photographer André Kertész. André kertész, 'the father of 35 millimeter photography,' was born in Hungary in 1894 and lived in the paris of the 1920's and 1930's before emigrating to the united states just before world war two. Long before every home had a camera his work embodied the spirit of what the world now calls candid photography: personal, mobile, unposed. 'we all owe him a great deal,' said Cartier-Bresson. Ranging over the whole scope of his life work, this documentary presents Kertész in his own words, explaining his pictures and sharing his memories - provincial life in Hungary, central Europe during the first world war, famous friends like Colette, Eisenstein, Chagall and Mondrian, architectural details of the poetry of human life. Kertész takes us through his archives, and out on the streets of New York to watch him shoot in his beloved Washington square and the medieval environment of the cloisters.
