Synopsis:
No German review yet:
Finis terrae: Finis Terræ is a 1929 French silent drama film written and directed by Jean Epstein. The story centres on a small group of men harvesting seaweed off the coast of Brittany, and the problems which arise when one of them gets an infected thumb. The film's title is the old Latin name of the region Finistère, where the story is set, and means 'End of the Earth'. The film is shot in a documentary-like style, with local non-actors in all roles, and frequent handheld camerawork. Also, Epstein often inserts slow motion footage. The Sea of Ravens: Jean Epstein's short documentary filmed on the Breton island of Sein. The Cradles: A five-minute 'adaptation cinegraphique' of Gabriel Fauré's song of the same name, to a poem by Sully Prudhomme. But it still encompasses many of Epstein's often-radical cinematic ideas - especially his sense of cinematic rhythm. Gold of the Seas: Conceived of first as a written text (one of two novels Epstein wrote . . . which deal with experiences on the islands off Brittany), and filmed with astonishingly disorienting continuity effects, [L'or des mers] also features equally disorienting uses of sound . . . Together, all of these aspects . . . generate a highly moving yet somehow disturbing portrait of the inhabitants of a remote, windswept island. Love Song: Ballad-type drama-documentary spoken in the Breton language and set in a Breton fishing community, telling of the impossible love between a fisherman and the lady of the manor. The Temporary: In a village in Brittany, a young maid and an old woman are spinning while the wind blows threateningly outdoors. In spite of the bad omen, the young maid's boyfriend decides to sail away. Worried, the young maid ask for help to a mysterious old man and his magical crystal ball in order to calm down the rough seas. The Fires of the Sea: Documentary film shot in Brittany about lighthouses and lighthouse keepers on the island of Ouessant and coast of Finistere. Jean Epstein, Young Oceans of Cinema: The life and work of French avant-garde filmmaker Jean Epstein told through archive footage, photos and articles.
