Portrait of the painter at his workshop: The film is the cinematic encounter of two looks (that of the painter Arié Mandelbaum and that of the filmmaker Boris Lehman) with one voice: that of the singer Esther Lamandier (who goes by the same name as Arié: Mandelbaum means «I'amandier»). Silent as a Fish: From pond to plate, we are shown the journey and destiny of one carp among many. This particular carp will be eaten stuffed during a family meal. Carp stuffed (in the Polish fashion), also called in yiddish (Gefilte Fish) is a traditional dish eaten by Ashkenazi Jews. It is cooked, sweetened and served as a cold dish at the start of the meal. The head is reserved for the head of the family. The film, set in Brussels, on the day of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah), aims to show the culinary preparation together with the accompanying prayers and ritual. It focuses particularly on the sacrifice of the fish and on the issue of mass extermination. Earthen Man: From the construction of a sculpture 'life size' in the earth, the director Boris Lehman imagines a story that staged a sculptor (Paulus Brun) struggling with an impossible order. The man of land is 'golemise', takes life in the countryside, and ends up dying on an opera stage. The Last: The dialogues are taken from the Gospel according to St. John. The apostles are almost all filmmakers, friends (and disciples) of Boris Lehman who came to play in front of the last house-artist's studio- which remained standing facing the new buildings of the European Parliament. The role of Judas is played by Claudio Pazienza and Boris Lehman embodies Christ. The staging is inspired by the fresco painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. The film was shot in a few hours, a Sunday morning in front of an incredible, almost Hollywood setting, in a street completely razed by real estate developers, just before the arrival of the police. Alterations and Repairs: Portrait of Richard Kenigsman by Boris Lehman. A Painter Under Surveillance: After a break of 20 years, the film maker makes another portrait of the painter Arié Mandelbaum. Together with his new film, that is premiered here, the older part is also being screened: Portrait of the Painter in His Studio. Here too, the film maker is not primarily interested in a portrait of the painter. He is more interested in the person and the friend. He could just as well have been a baker. But he still makes an attempt to touch on the ineffable. Even though painting would be pointless if you could describe it. The film maker and the painter share a Jewish background. But you don't always have to talk about that. It's a double portrait. Of a painter and a film maker. Things That Connect Me To Beings: The filmmaker does an inventory of the objects he has received from his friends or relatives. Through that variety of things that binds him and his beloved ones together, he tries to take interest in the notion of identity in an indirect, metonymic and multiple way: the part represents the whole, the object represents the individual to whom it now belongs but, at the same time, its original owner.
