Synopsis:
John and Bill are everyday blokes living it low and waiting for something promising coming their way. When a mysterious racing identity' named Alex Silver offers them what appears to be a life-changing opportunity to race their very own greyhound Bill and John throw themselves into the task with all the energy and resourcefulness they can muster! David Field and Syd Brisbane shine as the two lovable losers let loose at the track, in this tragically funny Aussie comedy about trust and friendship, perfectly complemented by Paul Kelly and Gerry hales' original soundtrack. Silent Partner you can bet your house on it!

Based on the internationally produced play of the same name by Australian writer Daniel Keene, Silent Partner is a tragi-comedy about friendship and survival in a world of limited opportunities. Bill and John are two down-on-their-luck blokes in their 30s who spend too much time at the greyhound track. To their surprise (and naive delight) they are offered the chance of a lifetime, to race a greyhound named Silent Partner, for the infamous Sydney racing identity, Mr Silver. They eagerly take possession of the red brindle bitch, polish their training prowess, down lots of booze and wait for Mr Silver's instructions. Pretty soon Silent Partner runs a close second at a bush track and Bill and John make preparations for her big city debut which Mr Silver has 'taken care of'. When Silent Partner runs a mediocre fourth at Wentworth Park, John takes it very badly. Bill, the official trainer, remains confident. Upon Mr Silver's instructions Bill and John reluctantly dope Silent Partner in her second city appearance. They back it with all the money they can scrounge and John agrees to buy-out the dog. Silent Partner wins by two lengths and the boys celebrate two victories; a champion dog and out-smarting Silver - or have they?

Two small-time gamblers fumble what they imagine would be a sure thing in a bittersweet comedy-drama from Australia. John (Syd Brisbane) and Bill (David Field) are a pair of down-and-outers with an unfortunate fondness for booze and a stunning inability to pick the winners at the dog track, no matter how often they try (and they try as often as they can). The two think they may have finally found the light at the end of the tunnel when a mysterious benefactor offers them the opportunity to race his purebred greyhound, Silent Partner, on the dog track circuit. John and Bill leap at the chance, but against all odds, Silent Partner goes on a losing streak as soon as they begin looking after his 'career.' Desperate to make good with the dog, John and Bill decide to give Silent Partner a chemical advantage over his competitors, which turns out to be a very bad idea. Silent Partner was written for the screen by Daniel Keene, who adapted the material from his own stage play. Noted Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly contributes several new tunes to the soundtrack.
