Synopsis:

A runner-up in the world cinema competition at Sundance, this debut feature from Argentina is set in Buenos Aires during the recent economic crisis. It observes the relationship between Beba, a spoiled, temperamental member of the city's beleaguered upper middle class (Norma Aleandro), and her longtime maid, Dora (Norma Argentina). Ms. Aleandro, the down-to-earth grande dame of Argentine cinema, and Ms. Argentina, an amateur who is a former maid herself, perform their tango of class resentment and unacknowledged dependency with consummate subtlety and grace. Those words also apply to Mr. Gaggero's direction, which is breathtakingly understated. Seen through his camera, the rooms and hallways of Beba's apartment, where most of the action takes place, seem to resonate with unspoken emotions - love, loyalty, regret, spite - that achieve a poignant, comical clarity precisely because they are never expressed. This film In effect depicts the cataclysmic transformation of a society through the lives of two ordinary women. It is modest in scope but large in spirit and ambition, and very nearly perfect in execution.
