Synopsis:
This stylish reworking of the 'Bride from Hell' legend from Nikkatsu helped to make director Chusei Sone (a protégé of Seijun Suzuki during the 1960s) one of the studio's most respected in-house filmmakers. Setsuko Ogawa from the Irogoyomi Ooku Hiwa series stars as the beautiful daughter of the shogun's samurai, the most desired woman in the empire. Ogawa falls in love with a young warrior (Hajime Tanimoto from the same year's classic Nureta Kuchibiru), but is murdered by a jealous servant girl before she can marry him. Ogawa's angry ghost comes back from the grave and continues to sleep with Tanimoto, plotting supernatural revenge on her killer. It's a familiar tale for regular viewers of Japanese genre cinema, but Sone gives it some individuality with his almost painterly compositions and enchanting touches of magic realism. Miki Hayashi and Hidemi Hara co-star.

From the Nikatsu studio (who brought us the work of Akira Kurosawa) Chusei Sone is considered one of Japan's greatest Filmmakers of the late 60's and early 70's. A leading force in 'Romano Films', characterized by their use of violence and sex in storytelling, this like many, mirrors Japan's changing society of the time. Chusei Sone's 'Immortal Love' tells the story of a young man's passion and desire for the daughter of a wealthy Samurai. For social reasons the relationship cannot be condoned but such is the power of their attraction, not even death can separate them. A Strange mysterious rare and bewitching piece of Japanese Cinema, Immortal Love epitomizes the key characteristics of Kaiden, the Japanese ghost story. Originally based on Buddhist tales of karma, morality and ghostly vengeance for misdeeds.

Immortal Love delivers a force beyond society, hierarchy and the living.
