Maigret et le fantôme (Maigret and the Ghost):
M had just wound up the case of what the papers have called the Motorcycle Gang, young men on motorcycles robbing jewelers. In the morning Lapointe came by to tell him Lognon had been shot, in the Avenue Junot, and taken to Bichat for surgery. At the Avenue Junot they find that Lognon had been staying nights in the room of Marinette Augier, but it soons becomes clear that he was doing some kind of surveillance. Marinette Augier has disappeared since the shooting. No one knows what he was working on, except that it was 'something' big. The inspectors of the 18th are handling the case, andChinquier finds an old man, Maclet, who spends all day in front of his window, and has seen many young women coming in and out of the Dutchman's, Norris Jonker's, a rich art collector across the way.

Maigret et le marchand de vin (Maigret and the Wine Merchant):
M is interrogating Théo Stiernet, a young man who'd killed his own grandmother for a few francs, when a message comes in from the 17th that Oscar Chabut, a wealthy wine merchant, had been killed. Going to the scene, he recognizes the house in the Rue Fortuny, belonging to Mme Blanche, which Oscar Chabut was leaving when he was shot. M finds Mme Blanche, and after a while Chabut's private secretary, Anne-Marie Boutin, the Grasshopper, with whom he'd gone there once a week. Chabut's wife is a beautiful woman in her forties, and when M goes to their house in the Place des Vosges, she seems no more upset than Anne-Marie had been. Chabut had been a fanatic womanizer, and seemingly had gone out of his way to make enemies. Jeanne Chabut, his wife, prepares a long list of possible liaisons for M. During his investigation, M receives an anonymous phone call, say that Chabut was a swine. M suspects it's the murderer, and that he'd seen him in the street. The Grasshopper remembers that the former bookkeeper, Gilbert Pigou, had been fired in a crude way not six months before. He becomes the focus of M's investigation, and calls again, apparently having followed M around. Finally, when M has set a manhunt in progress, Pigou shows up late at night at M's house to surrender. Chabut had fired him in a way to make him more or less unemployable, and his poverty and hatred of Chabut had finally led to the killing.

Maigret en Finlande (Maigret in Holland):
M goes to Delfzijl, in the Netherlands, as an unofficial representative of the Police Judiciaire, for a French professor, Jean Duclos, from the Unversity of Nancy, is being detained in the case of the murder of Conrad Popinga, a retired sea captain, whose guest he'd been while delivering a lecture on criminology. Popinga had been shot from his bathroom window, as he was returning to his house by bicycle, after seeing home Beetje Liewens, a neighbor. Duclos had heard the shot and rushed into the bathroom, and picked up the gun. A sailor's cap belonging to the seaman Oosting and a cigar butt are found in the house, but M dismisses these as red herrings. In the house at the same time were Popinga's wife,Liesbeth Popinga, her sister, Any Van Elst, an unmarried lawyer, and a maid. Neighbors, Carl Weinand and his wife and children had been there, as well as Cornélius Barens, a cadet on the training ship Popinga taught at. The Dutch inspector, Pijpekamp, is anxious that the town not be disturbed, and hopes M will accept that a foreign sailor did the crime and left by ship. But M reconstructs the evening, and reveals that Any Van Elst, jealous of Popinga's attention to Beetje Liewens had decided to kill him. Beetje Liewens had been looking for anyone to take her away from Delfzijl. M returns to Paris unthanked. Any Van Elst later killed herself before the trial, and Beetje escaped Delfzijl to Paris, having married a light bulb salesman.

Maigret et la demoiselle de compagnie:

Maigret et la croqueuse de diamants (Maigret Meets a Milord):
M enters the world of canals and barges when a woman is found strangled in the stable at Lock 14 at Dizy. Who she was and how she could have gotten there are a total mystery until the arrival of Sir Walter Lampson's yacht, the Southern Cross, and her identity is revealed as Mary Lampson, his wife. But her real name is unknown. Traces of tar and horse hair are found on her body, and suspicion falls on the barge Providence, which had been at Dizy the night before she was found, and the carter, Jean Liberge, an old man more at home with horses than people. Then Walter Lampson's companion, Willy Marco is found strangled in the canal, with Lampson's yacht club pin near the scene.

Maigret et l'affaire Saint-Fiacre (Maigret and the Countess):
M goes to Saint-Fiacre, his home town, after noticing a note that had been received by the Moulins police, and sent up to Paris, warning that a crime was going to be committed in the Church at Saint-Fiacre, during the first Mass onAll Soul's Day. And in fact, before M's very eyes, the old Comtesse de Saint-Fiacre dies during the mass... of heart failure. M locates her missal, in which a fake newspaper story of her son's suicide had been planted. Her son,Maurice de Saint-Fiacre appears with his mistress, Marie Vassilief. He is broke, as usual, had come to borrow more from his mother. His mother's secretary/lover, Jean Métayer is quick to protest his innocence. The steward, Gautier, who lives in the house that had been M's father's, tells M that the Countess had been going broke as well, and that he had been paying many of her debts. His son,Émile Gautier, works in the bank in Moulins, where M verifies the state of the estate.

Maigret et l'écluse no.1 (The Lock at Charenton):
Maigret is called to Charenton, Lock No. 1, where the owner of barges and quarries, Émile Ducrau had been stabbed and thrown into the canal. M goes to his house, and finds he is someone M likes. Ducrau offers 20,000 francs for the solution to the crime. M meets his wife, hears about his son, andGassin, his old buddy, who runs his barge the Golden Fleece with his retarded daughter, Aline Gassin. M has seen Gassin in a drunken stupor at the café. It was he who found Ducrau in the water. M vists Aline, who is afraid of Ducrau. M and Ducrau walk to thePont-Neuf, where Ducrau goes into the Tabac Henri IV, a kind of freighter's bourse. While he is there a boat comes up the river with the news that his son, Jean Ducrau, has hanged himself. In a note the boy claimed he'd been the one who'd stabbed his father.

Maigret et la princesse (Maigret in Society):
M is requested by the Director to handle the murder of an ex-Foreign Ministry official, Comte Armand de Saint-Hilaire, who had retired 12 years earlier, found shot in his study, by his housekeeper of 42 years, Jaquette Larrieu. His death coincides with the funeral of Prince Hubert de V--, of one of the great French familes. Prince Hubert's wife, Princess Isabelle de V--, had been a lifelong friend of Saint-Hilaire's - they'd intended to marry, but circumstances weren't apt, and she'd married Prince Hubert. They'd maintained a life-long correspondence, and everyone had known the romantic story that they intended to marry at the death of Prince Hubert. Saint-Hilaire had no enemies, and there was no sign of forced entry. All of the people connected were old and noteworthy.

Maigret et la nuit du carrefour (The Crossroad Murders):
For 17 hours M and Lucas have interrogated Carl Anderson, but he is unperturbed, and sticks to his story. He lives near Arpajon with his sister Else Anderson, at the Three Widows Crossroads. His neighbor, Émile Michonnet's new car has been found in Anderson's garage with a dead man, Isaac Goldberg, a diamond merchant of Antwerp, at the wheel. Anderson's old car was found in Michonnet's garage. M goes to the crossroads with Lucas, and interviews Else, who also claims to know nothing. Mme Goldberg comes to Arpajon, but is shot to death before M's eyes, as he goes towards the car. There are only three houses, Anderson's, Michonnet's, and the garage of M. Oscar, who regularly invites M in for a drink, which M as regularly refuses. Carl drives off to Paris in the morning to get his monthly pay, but never appears at his company, and his car is found abandoned near theBelgian border, as if he'd crossed over. Else refuses to believe he's run away, but suggests he may be mad...

Meurtre dans un jardin potager (Murder in a Vegetable Garden): Maigret investigates the suspicious death of a homeless man whose body was found in a tool shed...
