Synopsis:
Under World:
The discovery of a skeleton deep underground in a mine shaft brings Dalziel and Pascoe to the Yorkshire coalfield. When the body is confirmed as a man missing for ten years they realise that they have a murder to investigate. Raking over the past proves difficult for the local population as old wounds are re-opened and old grievances come to the fore. As the investigation progresses the acrimony increases and various relationships come under strain. As the police home in on the culprit the locals take the law into their own hands with tragic consequences.

Child's Play:
Oliver Reed once said his face looked like a garbage can. We can say of Warren Clarke that his face looks much like a battered old steel garbage can. His rugby playing days long over, Det. Supt. Andy Dalziel surveys the bleak Yorkshire landscape and the bleaker people inhabiting it with a jaundiced eye and biting sarcasm. He has to deal with a Bible-quoting superior officer who wants to weed out homosexuals on the police force; at the same time one of his men, who is gay, is going through emotional torments because of his infatuation with a delinquent youth. Dalziel has got to keep his team focused on a murder investigation, placate his superior, and stop any more murders in a very dysfunctional family.

Bones and Silence:
Dalziel and Pascoe are investigating a murder that Dalziel was a witness to, in a way, and at the same time, trying to work out who is sending Dalziel letters about an intended suicide. This is a very clever episode...
