Synopsis:
Following hot on the heels of the success of Black God, White Devil comes the second film in Brazilian director Glauber Rocha s famous trilogy; Terra Em Transe (Entranced Earth), a bold, confrontational, vibrant picture that stands as one of the greatest pieces of work from the director widely considered to be the leader of Brazil s Cinema Novo movement. In the hypothetical Latin-American country of Eldorado, the idealistic and anarchist poet and journalist Paulo Martins (Jardel Filho) fights against the populist governor, Felipe Vieira (José Lewgoy), and the conservative president Porfirio Diaz (Paulo Autran), supported by revolutionary forces. Paulo is depressed, since the two corrupt politicians were his former friends and have been elected with his moral support. Paulo Martins opposes the two equally corrupt political candidates. Paulo is torn between the madness of the elite and the blind submission of the masses. The film is told in flashback in an inspiring mixture of Villa Lobos, cinema verite and Afro Brazilian candomble.

The second effort by Brazilian master Glauber Rocha, ENTRANCED EARTH is a thought-provoking and unsettling political psychodrama. Conceived as the second chapter of a trilogy on the difficult and tricky political situation of sixties' Brazil, the film is set in the fictitious town of Eldorado and centres on the tribulations of dying poet and journalist Paulo Martins. The thoughts that run through the moribund intellectual's mind are a symbolic reflection upon the two different sides of power, left and right, amidst which lies the misery of men, dominated by greed and moral poverty. One of the most prominent figures of the Cinema Novo current, Rocha doesn't spare criticism for any one, from political leaders to intellectual elites to artists, the latter especially, are vigorously called to take sides and not to entrench themselves in a barren isolation from reality. Shot in haunting black and white, ENTRANCED EARTH reflects the climate of formal experimentation that distinguished Brazilian filmmaking of the late sixties, adopting a storytelling technique that is based mainly on the evocative power of cutting and editing, rather than on linear narration.

This Brazilian example of cinema novo chronicles the struggle of a man deeply entangled within unstable and crooked politics. The story is told in flashback by a writer who explains how he got into his present situation. He had been supporting a conservative party leader, but then decided to support the liberal candidate. The liberal wins the election, but soon reneges upon his campaign promises. The disillusioned writer decides to stay out of politics and resume his writing. Unfortunately, his girlfriend convinces him to try to talk the country's leader into pursuing a particular direction. The writer is soon shot.
