Synopsis:
The title of the documentary movie produced for the Film Foundation by Holland Harbour provokes questions.
In the just-conquered Dutch East Indies, a decree of 29 April 1942, Emperor Hirohito's birthday, laid down that from then on Japan must be referred to as Nippon, and also introduced the Japanese time and year. From that moment onwards until 15 August 2605 / 1945, the population of the Netherlands East Indies was living in the year 2602 (1942).

Dutch experience with in Japanese concentration camps during World War II in what was then the Netherlands East Indies. We want to document the efforts of Dutch women to both stay alive and maintain their dignity and culture, and to provide a normal existence to their children.

December 7, 1941. Bombs on Pearl Harbor. The Pacific war had begun, and The Netherlands, as the first allied country, declares war on Japan. Already on February 15 1942, "invincible" Singapore surrenders, and so, on March 8 does the Dutch colonial armyKNIL on Java, the last stronghold. Not long after, almost all of the Netherlands East Indies is occupied by the Imperial Japanese armed forces. The ensuing period ultimately leads to the departure of The Netherlands and the Dutch people from their colony, and the end game in the struggle for an independent Indonesia. But before that conclusion, many Dutch face very difficult times. Shortly after occupation, all Europeans and many of the Europeans with mixed ancestry as well, are interned in fenced-off parts of the cities, or transported to factory premises, schools, monasteries, godowns or to remote areas of the country.

The dvd features "The year 2602" plus three additional exclusive films. One shows more pre-war footage of Dutch children in the Dutch East Indies, another follows the sea voyage home, after the war. Willeke van Ammelrooy made the portrait of a mother (Nell van de Graaf) who survived detention with her four children.
