Synopsis:
Set in the city of Rotterdam with its stark modern architecture, Beat depicts the bleak realities of modern office life. Peter, a young employee in an anonymous firm, is on the career ladder. He is under pressure to succeed and to produce more, but at the same time he is pervaded by a sense of exhaustion and purposelessness. We see Peter staring blankly at his computer screen, wandering over the empty squares of the big city and motionlessly sitting at home for hours. Addressing the problem of 'burn out' that is affecting a growing number of young Dutch professionals, Beat cleverly captures the conflict between the social pressure to succeed and the sense of futility that affects those suffering from burn out. Third-year film academy student David Verbeek made Beat with a budget of just 500 euros. The film received wide acclaim in The Netherlands as an example of the new élan in Dutch cinema.
