Synopsis:
Juan Millares Alonso's nonfiction film Cuadernos de contabilidad de Manolo Millares (aka The Accounting Ledgers of Manolo Millares) explores, cinematically, the boyhood and adolescence of the director's uncle, the legendary Spanish painter Manolo Millares (born 1928). The prodigious Millares -- who came of age in the Canary Islands -- wrote highly observant, introspective and detailed memoirs as a child and teenager; Alonso uses those memoirs to provide a basic narrative structure and backbone for the documentary. What emerges is an enduring portrait of the gradual formation of an artist. On a broader scale, Alonso also uses passages for the memoirs to convey the atmosphere of the Canary Islands during the '30s and '40s and thus suggests how conducive that environment was to creative work.
