Synopsis:
The destruction wrought in Lebanon during the war of 2006 is seen through unexpected eyes in this fusion of drama and documentary from filmmakers Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige. The internationally famous French actress Catherine Deneuve (playing herself) is visiting Beirut and wants to see the aftermath of the 2006 conflict first hand. Deneuve's driver, a loyal fan and fellow actor named Rabih Mroue, is more than willing to help, and together they spend the day exploring the city, from the city centre through the village of Bint El Jbeil (which Mroue calls home) to the Israeli border. While Deneuve is protected by a bodyguard, the guided tour presents more danger than she expects, with fighter jets buzzing overhead and land band dotting a few side streets, as Mroue makes sure she witnesses both the beauty of Lebanon and the wreckage battles with Israel have left behind.

July 2006. A war breaks out in Lebanon. A new war, but not just one more war. A war that crushes the hopes of peace and the dynamism of our generation. We no longer know what to write, what stories to recount, what images to show. We ask ourselves: "What can cinema do?" That question, we decide to translate it into reality. We go to Beirut with an "icon", an actress who, to us, symbolizes cinema, Catherine Deneuve. She will meet our preferred actor, Rabih Mroué. Together, they will drive through the regions devastated by the conflict. Through their presence, their meeting, we hope to find the beauty which our eyes no longer perceive. It is the beginning of an unpredictable, unexpected adventure.

French icon Catherine Deneuve has starred in some of the best known and highly regarded French films of all time but Je Veux Voir (I Want To See) sees her take on a different role, playing herself journeying through war-torn Lebanon, guided by the charismatic actor Rabih Mroué. The initial frostiness between the two actors thaws and with time on the road their friendship grows, as the intrepid excursion becomes an unpredictable, unexpected adventure. Part tour, part homage to the magnificent Deneuve, Je Veux Voir is the latest film to be directed by Lebanese artists Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige addressing the harsh realities of conflict in the Middle East with a cinematic sensibility.
