Boy and Bicycle - Ridley Scott 1958/16mm/b&w
Using a Bolex camera borrowed from art school Ridley Scott shot his first film over the summer of 1956 in his home town of Hartlepool. Scott used his brother, Tony, then 16 years old, and his mother and father as actors. He finished the film in 1958 with a grant from the BFI following his graduation from the Royal College of Art.

Dear Phone - Peter Greenaway 17 mins/1976/16mm/colour
One of Peter Greenaway's early works, Dear Phone is a surreal celebration of a former English icon - the red phone box. Questioning film forms and documentary traditions, the film displays an intriguing mix of method and madness.

Doodlebug - Christopher Nolan 1997/16mm/b&w
One of the early short films from the director of Following, Memento and Insomnia; Doodlebug was made at the film society of University College London, where he was studying English Literature.

Eight - Stephen Daldry 1998/35mm/colour
Eight was the film debut from Stephen Daldry, previously acclaimed for his work in theatre. In many respects Eight is now considered by Daldry and producer Jon Finn of Working Title, to be a rehearsal for Billy Elliott, which they went on to make the following year.

Gasman - Lynne Ramsay 1997/35mm/colour
Gasman was the third short film made by Lynne Ramsay before directing her debut feature. The film won the Cannes Jury Prize and the Scottish BAFTA in 1998. Ramsay collaborated with the director of photography, production designer and editor with whom she has continued to work on her feature films, Ratcatcher and Morvern Caller.

Girl Chewing Gum - John Smith 1976/16mm/b&w
The idea behind Girl Chewing Gum is to expose the illusion of cinema, making us aware that we are looking at something that is completely contrived - an ambition in total opposition to that of mainstream Hollywood Cinema. Since 1972 John Smith has made over thirty film, video and installation works.

Home - Morag McKinnon 1998/35mm/colour
Morag McKinnon's second short film shows a usual day in the unusual life of a housing officer. It won the BAFTA for Best Short Film in 1999.

Joyride - Jim Gillespie 1995/35mm/colour
Jim Gillespie had directed for television for several years before making Joyride, the short film that led to him directing his first feature film, I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Inside Out - Tom and Charles Guard 1999/S16mm/colour
Inside Out is the second in a series of three short films from brothers Tom and Charles Guard about brief encounters in the city. A silent film set in contemporary London.

Je t'aime John Wayne - Toby MacDonald 2000/35mm/b&w
A first film for the writer, director and producer. A hit at film festivals around the world, that was BAFTA nominated and won the European Academy Award for Best Short Film in 2001.

The Sheep Thief - Asif Kapadia 1997/16mm/colour
The Sheep Thief was Asif Kapadia's graduation film at the Royal College of Art and was shot in Rajasthan, India. It won numerous awards and paved the way for his critically acclaimed debut feature, The Warrior.

The Short and Curlies - Mike Leigh 1987/35mm/colour
This signature comedy by Mike Leigh saw him collaborate with many of the cast and crew he has gone on to work with throughout his career. This was the first in Channel 4's series of short films to which it lent its name.

Telling Lies - Simon Ellis 2000/dv/colour
Written, produced and directed by Simon Ellis, this tale of modern manners and communication breakdown is told entirely in animated captions that invite the viewer to share the truth behind the soundtrack's excuses and lies.

UK Images - Martin Parr 1997/dv/colour
This selection from a series of documentary shorts by photographer Martin Parr was produced for the BBC. Parr has developed an international reputation for his innovative imagery and his oblique approach to social documentary.

Who's my Favourite Girl? - Adrian McDowall 1999/16mm/colour
Adrian McDowall's graduation film from the Edinburgh College of Art was shot in his home town of Wigtown using friends and his mother as actors. The film was made with £3000 and won a BAFTA in 2000.

This critically acclaimed DVD contains 16 of the best classic and award winning British short films and delivers a snapshot of British cinema past and present.
