Synopsis:
Oscar-winning director Florian Gallenberger explores the crucial role that foreigners played in helping countless Chinese escape a fate worse than death in this period docudrama concerning the 1937 invasion of Nanking by the ruthless Japanese Imperial Army. Casually known by historians as the "Rape of Nanking," the relentless assault on the then-Chinese capitol found countless men, women, and children slaughtered with a ferocity that shocked the entire world. Yet, despite the violence that surrounded them, some people refused to sit by silently as the innocents perished. One of those people was German engineer and Nazi party member John Rabe, who earned the nickname "The Schindler of China" for constructing a vast safety zone in which nearly a quarter of a million civilians sought sanctuary. Ulrich Tukur, Daniel Bruehl, Dagmar Manzel, and Steve Buscemi star.

Nanking in 1937. Hamburg businessman John Rabe has lived with his wife Dora in the former Chinese capital for almost thirty years. He is a head of the local branch of Siemens and is now due to return to Berlin. The manager is reluctant to leave because he has developed a real bond to the country and its people. But, during his farewell party, Nanking is bombed by the Japanese, who have recently taken Shanghai. The whole town is in panic and Rabe opens the doors of the company's compound in order to provide refuge for his workers and their families desperate to escape the raid. German-Jewish diplomat Dr Rosen suggests that a security zone be set up for Chinese civilians. John Rabe is appointed chairperson of Nanking's security zone. The imperial Japanese army cracks down on the Chinese civilians population with astonishing brutality. However, Rabe and his comrades-in-arms succeed in wresting the planned security zone from the Japanese. Hundreds of thousands of people flee into the zone. Finally, the Japanese make use of a pretext in order to attack the zone for Rabe a race against time begins.

Drama set in China in 1937 and based on true events as documented by John Rabe, a German businessman, in his diaries. During the Nanking Massacre, in which the Japanese massacred hundreds of Chinese civilians, John Rabe succeeded in establishing a neutral zone in the city, which saved countless Chinese lives.
