Synopsis:
Anna Neagle stars as the humble orange seller Nell Gwyn who captures the heart of a king in this bawdy and controversial British historical drama. In a 17th century England revelling in its freedom after years of Puritan domination, King Charles II (Sir Cedric Hardwicke) promises to restore to the nation "its old good nature, its old good manners and its old good humour". Wild and free, Nell Gwyn captures his imagination like no other woman. She becomes his mistress and, in effect, the "uncrowned Queen of England".
But can the saucy young hussy keep her monarch's attention when the beautiful and refined Duchess of Portsmouth (Jeanne De Casalis) is determined to destroy their love? A huge hit at the British box office, the film caused uproar amongst American censors when it was scheduled for release there. Outraged by its bawdy tone they demanded no less than 35 cuts and a change in factual history to provide a "suitable" ending! This is the original, uncut version that British audiences thronged to see...

King Charles II first meets Nell Gwyn after seeing her do a turn at Drury Lane. They soon become close, the King preferring her feisty irreverent company to that of the aristocratic French Duchess of Portsmouth. Nell becomes his most loyal subject, while ever-ready to take the Duchess down a peg. But the actress can never hope to be fully accepted by the King's circle despite his constant attentions.

The story of the romance between actress Nell Gwyn and King Charles II.
