Synopsis:

It is a momentous day in the life of film extra Joe McGill. He has finally been given one crucial line in a television film. One line that could give him the big break he has been longing for, and lead to the fulfilment of his life-long ambition to become a professional actor... if he can survive the on-set chaos! This feature-length drama was first screened in 1976 as part of Granada's Red Letter Day anthology series, and has all the wry humour and warmth we have come to associate with writer Jack Rosenthal - multiple BAFTA winner and one of Britain's most acclaimed and consistently successful television dramatists. Directed by BAFTA-winning Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral), comedian Joe Black makes his real-life TV debut as Joe McGill, and Jack Shepherd received a BAFTA nomination for his role as harassed director Phil Parish; several Coronation Street regulars also appear among the supporting cast.

A film extra has won a chance for the big break in his career. He has two crucial lines in a television film, but nothing goes according to plan.
