Synopsis:
Germany occupies Poland in 1939. They face opposition in the countryside from Polish fighters. German spy units are sent in, one headed up by young Oskar Koenig, a poet by nature. He saves the life of a beautiful young woman, Rachel, dying in a blizzard. He takes her to his cabin, nurses her back to health as the war closes in on them. They consummate their immense attraction to each other despite her being the daughter of a Rabbi, and engaged to Bernard, an orthodox Jew in her village. Rachel returns to her village to find it and its inhabitants destroyed by German soldiers. Oskar rides in, saves both her and Bernard, her fiancé, and sends them, with horses and money, toward the Russian front. It's a dangerous journey but their only hope. Rachel soon discovers she's pregnant with Oskar's child. Bernard forgives her, pledges his love and they marry. Rachel gives birth to a baby boy. She and Oskar unite at a German military camp. But her baby is killed. She and Bernard flee the camp after Rachel kills the German that killed her baby. Bernard sacrifices his life so that Rachel can live and re-unite with Oskar.

At the dawn of World War 2, a Rabbi's daughter and a disenchanted German soldier fall in love and are separated by the war. They struggle on a perilous journey to find one another.
