Synopsis:
In the 1960's, encouraged by the government, a large number of families leave Chinese cities to settle in the poorer regions of the country, in order to develop local industry. The film's main character is a 19 years old girl who lives in the Guizhou province, where her parents have settled. That's where she has grown up, where her friends are and where she first experiences love. But her father believes that their future lies in Shanghai. How can they all keep on living together when they don't share the same dreams?

In the mid-1960s the Chinese government, fearing conflict with the Soviet Union, called for strategically important factories to be moved inland to form a 'Third Line of Defence'. Answering their country's call, innumerable workers and their families left their homes in large cities for the barren terrain of western China. Set twenty years later, as the country begins to reform and open up to the rest of the world, Wang Xiaoshuai's moving follow-up to 'Beijing Bicycle' tells the poignant tale of one such displaced family and the conflict that arises when 19 year old Qinghong finds love for the first time with a local boy, much to the disapproval of her father who dreams of returning the family to Shanghai.

Set in 1960s China, a family become divided over the father's plan to move out of their rural home and relocate to Shanghai. However, for their teenage daughter, the relocation presents a huge dilemma; how can she leave the only home that she has ever known and the place she's found love?
