Synopsis:
Paddy Doolan (Michael Craig, Mary Bryant) is a man who refuses to accept change. In a new century where the motor car is changing the way things are done, the stubborn Irishman, the last of the Draught-horse teamsters, continues to haul timber the old way. His recalitrance has estranged him from his wife Jenny (Robyn Nevin) and sons Will (Lou Brown) and Michael (Simon Burke). But Michael continues to love his father and goes in search of him. Michael's odyssey will involve a part-time horse thief and a stern station owner, and finally lead to an understanding and newfound respect for his father, the man they call "The Irishman". Produced by Anthony Buckley and Directed by Donald Crombie, The Irishman Co-stars Bryan Brown, Tony Barry and Gerard Kennedy. It is regarded as one of Australian Cinema's most overlooked classics.

In Queensland, Australia in the 1920s, a rugged Irishman bucks the encroaching modern age to the detriment of himself and his family in The Irishman. Michael Craig plays Paddy Doolan, an individualistic force-of-nature who runs a team of imposing and impressive Clydesdale draught horses. With the internal combustion engine making inroads into the Australian outback, Doolan insists on ignoring the on-coming mechanical monstrosity and continues to put all his faith into his horse team. His recalcitrance tears apart his family -- consisting of his acquiescent wife Jenny (Robyn Nevin); his rebellious older son Will (Lou Brown); and supportive younger son Michael (Simon Burke). Refusing to give in to changing times, he not only ends up destroying his business and his family but himself as well.

Drama about a family of Irish immigrants undergoing a period of change in North Queensland during the 1920s.
