Synopsis:

Clothilde de Watteville (Lauren Hutton) is compared to 'Hecate,' a three-headed Greek fertility goddess and a protector of witches who came to be associated with Persphone and Hades. Clothilde/Hecate runs into Julien Rochelle (Bernard Giraudeau), a very young French diplomat in north Africa just before the outbreak of World War II and the two have a casual sexual encounter that leads to another such meeting, and another. His interest in her and his curiosity are heightened when she refuses to reveal any information about herself, and when she disappears for stretches at a time without any explanation. As his sexual passions increase at a par with his frustration at her behavior, he gives up trying to relate at all and walks out of the relationship. A few years later they meet at a diplomatic reception in Berne, the diplomat is older and perhaps wiser, but Clothilde's behavior is an inexplicable as ever.

Berne 1943. Julien Rochelle, the French ambassador, is hosting a dinner party; he is assailed by memories. North Africa between two worlds, the European and the Arab, and between two eras: the final years of the heyday of colonialism. Julien is welcomed to his first posting as a young diplomat by Ambassador Vaudable. Julien meets Clothilde, whose husband is away on a mission in Siberia. A liaison begins, at first no more than an escape from boredom. But it develops into a passionate relationship independent of time and social standards. In spite of discreet warnings from Vaudable, Julien spends more and more of his time on Clothilde and less and less on his work.

Hécate is a strangely fascinating film, tightly directed and magnificently photographed by the champion of Swiss cameraman, Renato Berta. Is is a nocturnal film but Berta makes the night shine and glitter. Lauren Hutton is cast as a mystery-woman type which she fills to perfection.
