Synopsis:
A young man finds that the current political turmoil in Eastern Europe bears uncanny comparisons to his own rocky homosexual awakening in The Man Who Loved Yngve, Stiane Kristiansen's emotionally-charged tale of coming out in late 1980s Europe. For 17-year-old Jarle Klepp, it seems life could not possibly improve; as a resident of the small town of Stavanger, Norway, Jarle sits on the very cusp of adulthood. He also claims a gorgeous girlfriend and a hip best friend, and looks ahead eagerly to his plans to kick start a punk band called 'Mattias Rust.' In truth, however, Jarle harbors long-buried gay desires, and it takes another young man - a village newcomer called Yngve - to draw out these latent feelings. Suddenly, Jarle finds himself plunged headfirst into a maelstrom of conflicting feelings, desires, and impulses, led forward only by an overwhelming urge to be as close to Yngve as possible, all the time. In the end, Jarle's need to be true to himself may claim its own rewards, but it will also inevitably mean losing the security of approval from many around him.

A bittersweet, warm coming-of-age story, The Man Who Loved Yngve  is a pitch-perfect reflection of the critical transformative period in any young gay mans life.   Its 1989, the Berlin wall is about to collapse, and the airwaves are full of the sounds of REM, The Cure and Jesus and Mary Chain. For 17-year-old Jarle, life is just about music and his ambition to create a great punk band.  But when an intriguing new classmate (Yngve) arrives in school one day, he is forced to question his priorities, and deal with his burgeoning sexuality.  Capturing the pure driving power of a youthful first love, this romantic drama is consistently fresh and charmingly honest

The Norwegian town of Stavanger is nice but it's a bit of a monotonous place to live in, and the revolutionary end of the 1980s only reaches it through the television screen. For seventeen-year-old Jarle, the sole escape from the grey tedium is through the music of new wave bands, under the influence of which he and his friends form "the most hardcore punk band in Stavanger. When a new student named Yngve starts school though, Jarle's hitherto childish world is turned upside down: without even knowing how it happened, he finds himself choosing between the girl that everyone envies him for and a boy he doesn't really even know that well.
