Synopsis:

Shuhei has a problem. When he graduates from college, he has a fine job waiting for him. Family connections have made certain of that. However, in order to graduate, his thesis professor has to certify him. Since his professor, a former sumo wrestler, is the not-so-unofficial patron of the college's almost nonexistent sumo squad, and Shuhei looks like someone who could do the squad some good, a tradeoff is arranged: Shuhei will join the college sumo squad and work hard for it, and the professor will let him graduate on schedule. After a few more 'volunteers' are rounded up, theirs is a real underdog team, full of skinny kids and out-of-shape heavyweights -- even an English rugby player. They are embarrassed even to compete, much less to train hard. However, the enthusiasm of the school's alumni shames the group into doing their best, which (as things in teen movies usually turn out) is more than good enough.

Yet another tradition in the tradition of 'ragtag misfits' in Japanese comedy...Sumo Do, Sumo Don't tells the story of a university sumo club in Japan. In today's Japan, the younger generation is more interested in 'Western' sports like baseball and basketball. Professor Anayama, a former university sumo champion, blackmails graduating (and slim) student Shuhei into joining the decimated university team, or he doesn't graduate. Along with a pro wrestler, an unpopular, chubby guy, and a gaijin (white guy), the team begins training for competition, even though none of them cares about sumo at all. Gradually, they develop a love and respect for the traditional sport.

With his grades sliding at university, Shuhei's professor blackmails him into joining the Sumo wrestling team. He begrudgingly accepts, knowing it's the only way for him to graduate. Drafting together a motley bunch of wrestlers, including an English rugby player who's afraid of baring his legs, he himself becomes inspired to show what the worst-ranked Sumo team in Japan can really do!
