Synopsis:
Miranda is desperate to fit in, but her public school background makes her a bit of a misfit, especially compared to childhood rival Tilly (Sally Phillips) and the rest of 'the girls' (not least because she's a foot taller than them all). She can't seem to quite grasp how to behave socially and constantly fails to avoid embarrassing situations, especially around men, specifically Gary (Tom Ellis) her old friend from Uni. A constant disappointment to her mother Penny (Patricia Hodge), and lacking any real capacity or interest for business, Miranda employs her childhood friend Stevie (Sarah Hadland) to manage her joke shop, within which Miranda is at her happiest, playing with anything from Pirate Hats to fart machines.Despite blowing her whole inheritance on a joke shop and employing childhood friend Stevie to manage it, Miranda is desperate to fit in; a near-impossible task with her over-bearing mother, Penny's, constant attempts to marry her off. When long-term crush Gary Preston returns from his travels, Miranda bumps into him and, anxious not to make one of her usual conversational cock-ups, talks all about her Olympic gymnastic achievements and her two children, Orlando and Bloom. Surely everyone ends up lying to impress when they're nervous, don't they? After an impromptu "date" is planned, Miranda decides to "Trinny and Susannah" herself, and takes a trip to the new "bespoke" clothing store, Transformers, picking an outfit guaranteed to stop people calling her sir to her face. A reluctant lunch with newly engaged Sloane Ranger school friends Tilly and Fanny leads to a wedding dress shopping bonanza and leaves Miranda looking like she's had a chiffon-based anaphylactic shock, witnessed by a delighted Penny and rather terrified Gary.It doesn't matter what Miranda attempts in life - be it dating, trying to cancel her gym membership, or simply dealing with her overbearing mother - she always seems to fall flat, quite literally, and is incapable of leaving a room without knocking something over.

Miranda Hart's farcical, affectionate, laugh out loud sitcom introduces us to a woman desperate to fit in, and lead a normal life. But, Miranda finds it impossible to stand up to her eccentric mother Penny (Patricia Hodge) who makes embarrassing and desperate attempts to marry her off. Her rivalry with boarding school chum and PR Sloane Tilly (Sally Phillips) gets her in to all sorts of trouble as she can't help but lie to impress her; and worst of all her hapless pursuits of long-term crush Gary (Tom Ellis) means she always ends up flat on her face - literally in most cases. All her old friend Stevie (Sarah Hadland) does is stand back, laugh and unhelpfully point out where she is going wrong. Miranda cannot be bothered with all the hassle of foreign travel so, telling everybody she is off to Thailand, she books into a local hotel. However she is rumbled, first by her mother when she goes home for more clothes and then by Gary's boss Clive, who turns up as her escort. There is compensation when she is mistaken for a high-flying conference attendee called Amanda and hits it off with the organizer, but when the real Amanda shows up there is nothing for it but to climb out of the nearest window.
Season 1, Episode 5: Excuse
Original Air Date-7 December 2009
To stop her mother organizing a Pride and Prejudice themed party to find her a beau Miranda agrees to a blind date with Tilly's friend Dreamboat Charlie, but he is a total bore and so the date is off and the party on again.
