Synopsis:
The first film by and about an African-American lesbian, writer-director Cheryl Dunye's fantasy is a "mockumentary," focusing on recapturing the life and times of a fictionalized 1930s Hollywood actress. Dunye plays herself as a video store employee who yearns to be a director. She decides to make a documentary about Fae Richards (Lisa Marie Bronson), a forgotten African-American actress from the 1930s. Dunye discovers the woman, who often played degrading roles as a "mammy" in Hollywood films, was the secret lover of a white director, Martha Paige. Dunye interviews feminist historian Camille Paglia (playing herself), who explains Richards' career and its importance. While researching the project, Dunye falls in love with Diana (Guinevere Turner), a white customer. But her unceasing work on the film project interferes with her relationships with Diana and also with her friend and fellow video store employee Tamara (Valarie Walker).

Ten years ago "The Screech" was the hottest lesbian band around. Iris and Lily were the lead vocalists, MJ the producer, and Carol always toured with them. But their popularity is now long since past. Iris now drinks too much and fantasizes about a comeback. She and MJ split up years ago. Carol and Lily are bored by their relationship. Then Cricket arrives on the scene. This twenty-year-old is looking for trouble and finds it. After a pool party awash with cocaine and alcohol, Iris winds up on Cricket's lap. This makes MJ furious. An argument ensues and escalates into a fight during which Cricket is injured and dies. The girlfriends decide to overcome their differences and cover-up this ugly secret by ditching the body. Then, one year later, Skye turns up on Lily and Carol's doorstep with revenge as her aim.

Two middle-aged, lesbian couples accidentally kill a younger lesbian and hide the body, without reporting it to the authorities. Their guilt and long-kept, dark secret comes back to haunt them, as an unexpected stranger shows up in their lives, bringing tension and discord. Little do they know that this mysterious stranger has a plan which includes all four of them.
