Synopsis:
To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Blitz, this remarkable four-part series reveals what it was like to live through the devastation and psychological torment of wartime Britain. A specially built row of terraced houses on a remote military airbase is subjected to a dramatic range of large-scale explosions, similar to those dropped by the Luftwaffe in the summer of 1940. We witness the destructive power of these bombs and rockets on peoples' homes and lives both close-up and in super-slow motion. Presented by Tony Robinson, this series also details scientific investigation of the effects of each bomb, expert analysis of the historical context and the psychological effects, the experiences of a Luftwaffe pilot and moving personal testimony from survivors, this series examines why the Blitz ultimately failed and how the British people faced the nightmare of total war and came out stronger. High-speed cameras operating at 1,000 frames per second reveal the detail of each blast to explain how it could be that people had their clothes ripped from them or could end up lifted onto the roofs of their homes. Calling on eye-witness accounts from the Blitz, the programme details the immense psychological damage caused to individuals caught up in the bombing raids and explores how, in response to the Luftwaffe's assault, Churchill rapidly reorganised and improved defences.
