Catherine Bernstein

Catherine Bernstein

Synopsis:
OMA (1996)
Oma is the German word for 'GrandMa'. Catherine Bernstein's wish was to interview her German grandmother, as well as her grandmother's classmates, who all took their A level in 1933 in Kassel, Germany (a 200,000-inhabitant city 100 miles East of Cologne).
Sixty years later, through different interviews, this film brings to life a photography of German society facing Nazism: adhesion to Nazism for some, fear for others, escape for a few of them. But what has become of the seven Jewish girls studying with Oma?

THE SOUR GRAPES (1998)
This film is about the women of the following generation, born in 1937, whose parents either supported or suffered the rise of Nazism. How did this generation grow up in Germany with such an heritage?

THE ABSENTEES (1999)
Kassel, Germany during the Thirties. Among all the pupils of a girl class, seven of them have had their destiny shattered by History -precisely the seven Jewish schoolgirls.
Catherine Bernstein goes in search for these missing pupils in the different countries where they found asylum in order to escape Nazism. One of them stayed in Germany and died in a concentration camp. The six others talk about their exile, tell us their feelings about Germany and about their old German classmates who, for some of them, adhered to Nazism...

A riveting and sometimes frightening investigation about Nazism experienced by a 1933 German class questioned sixty years later...
