Synopsis:

Under the North Star II - closes the story that began in the first part, based on the trilogy by Väinö Linna. The bitter and bloody 1918 Civil War divided the Finnish nation. The Reds' suffer a devastating defeat and the Whites began a merciless cleansing operation. Neither women nor children were spared. 74,000 Reds were arrested and put in prison camps. 13,000 died there due to hunger, disease or execution.

Akseli Koskela, Company Commander of the Red Guard in the Civil War 1918, avoids execution by mere chance, and is pardoned after four years in prison. After his liberation, Akseli withdraws from the world and works for the future of his children. Like in other European countries in the 1920s, extremist movements fight to rise in power and are willing to take
the law into their own hands. After hard times, life finally seems to get back to normal. But then in November 1939, the Soviet Union tries to occupy Finland, and the Winter War breaks out.
The Finnish nation, once torn in two by the 1918 Civil War, unite in the face of a common enemy and accomplish the impossible. An overwhelming enemy is fended off, but the price is high, also for Akseli and Elina, whose two younger sons are killed in the war. Soon after the Winter War, Finland is dragged into World War II and suffer four long years of wartime.
The fears of Akseli and Elina are realised as also their oldest son get killed on the battlefield during the final moments of the World War II. The country remains independent, but the sacrifices that ordinary people and families have to make are immense and inhuman as they are caught between the wheels of history like grains of sand.
