Synopsis:
Adapted from the novel by H.E. Bates, the British miniseries Love for Lydia featured Mel Martin in the title role. A young and giddy heiress, Lydia spent the better part of the 1930s holding several eligible bachelors in her thrall. Meanwhile, long-suffering Edward Richardson (Christopher Blake), convinced that he'd be the heroine's one true love if only given the chance, stood quietly on the sidelines as the impulsive Lydia toyed with the emotions of his rivals. The 13 hour-long episodes of Love for Lydia were originally aired over London Weekend Television in 1977, then telecast in America as part of PBS' Masterpiece Theatre anthology beginning September 23, 1979.

This thirteen-part series explores just how painful love can be for young people. Would-be writer Edward Richardson is in love with heiress Lydia Aspen and wants her all to himself. Lydia professes to be in love with him, but her first love is excitement. There are several other young men who vie with Richardson for Lydia's affection, and she sends mixed signals to them all, playing them off against each other, sometimes with dire results. At least that's the way Richardson sees things, but it's not the whole story.

Love for Lydia was made into a thirteen-part serial by London Weekend Television, first shown in 1977. It featured several actors in performances which were early in their television careers, including Christopher Blake, Mel Martin, Christopher Hancock, Peter Davison, Jeremy Irons, Ralph Arliss and Sherrie Hewson. It also featured Rachel Kempson, Beatrix Lehmann and Michael Aldridge as Lydia's eccentric relations. Other stars were David Ryall, Sam Kydd, Georgine Anderson, Paula Kent, Donald Bisset, Antony Brown, Jonathan Darwill, Holly de Jong, Fiona Duncan and Carol Frazer .
