Recovering alcoholic Ken Randle seeks revenge on Terry Dyer, just out of jail, whom he believes killed his son Mark twelve years earlier, though Dyer has always protested his innocence, claiming the killer was Nick Fisher, who Mark caught having sex with his sister Sarah,then only thirteen. Then Nick Fisher is killed. His widow identifies Dyer as hanging around Nick's workplace but CCTV proves that he was some miles away at the time of the murder.

Dyer is released and Ken Randle confesses to Fisher's murder and goes on trial. However, Sarah comes to see Walker. She is anxious to tell him what really happened on the night that her brother was killed. As a consequence the charge of murder against Randle seems less likely but the remainder of his family will never be the same again.

Season 17 Episode 1

Part one of two. A recently released convicted murderer returns to London in a bid to prove his innocence - only to be shot in the arm by the aggrieved father of his alleged victim. But even he eventually begins to doubt the man's guilt, and when Walker and Connor investigate, they unearth a tale of buried secrets, injustice and revenge. David Hayman and Victoria Smurfit star, with Maurice Röeves and Johnny Harris.

Season 17 Episode 2

Part two of two. As the hunt for Nick Fisher's murderer continues, Satch coaxes the victim's widow into identifying Dyer as a suspect but when the man's name is cleared the sergeant is forced to cover his tracks. Taking charge of the situation, Walker looks over the original case files and finds a piece of old evidence that provides vital clues - but it's Sarah Randle who holds the key to the truth. David Hayman stars.

Trial & Retribution is a feature-length ITV police procedural television drama series that began in 1997. It was devised and written by Lynda La Plante as a follow-on from her successful television series Prime Suspect. Each episode of the Trial & Retribution series is broadcast over two nights.
