Synopsis:

Season 18 Episode 1

Part one of two. Walker is asked by a friend to investigate the disappearance of his sister eight years previously, and he traces a link to an unidentified corpse found in a buried box. After it is identified as the missing woman, suspicion soon falls upon the victim's then-husband, whose second wife has also been reported missing.

Season 18 Episode 2

Part two of two. The diary's authenticity is called into question when prime suspect Ronnie Reid refutes the evidence it provides and is backed up by the victim's mother. With no evidence to charge him, the man is released but the discovery of CCTV footage forces Walker into a race against time to solve the case before the truth is taken to the grave. Guest starring Kerry Fox and Judy Loe.

Mike Walker is on leave when an old friend, Bill, asks for his help. His sister Margaret disappeared some years earlier and he has recently been contacted by a woman whose daughter, Anna, has also gone missing. The common link is that both were married to a man named Kevin Reid. D.I. Mullins, who was in charge of Margaret's case, is bullish but lets Walker in on his findings. Eventually Margaret's body, minus the legs, is found in a large box.Evidence points to the culprit being Kevin's brother Ronnie, a simple lad with a speech impediment.

Whilst Anna's diary entries initially suggest that Ronnie was stalking her, they are eventually dismissed as forgeries. Ronnie also had an alibi for the time that Margaret went missing and it looks as if he is being framed, possibly by his brother, with whom there is an explosive showdown at a race course.

Trial & Retribution is a feature-length ITV police procedural television drama series that began in 1997. It was devised and written by Lynda La Plante as a follow-on from her successful television series Prime Suspect. Each episode of the Trial & Retribution series is broadcast over two nights.
