Synopsis:

Several stories cross paths over the course of a few bustling days in New Zealand in this drama. Matariki is the Maori New Year Celebration, and as the holiday is poised to begin, rugby star Tama (Mark Ruka) is driving through South Auckland when he sees a man being brutally attacked. Tama pulls over to help, but ends up getting beaten severely enough to end up in the hospital, while his car is stolen. The man on the receiving end of the beating, Gunge (Edwin Wright), is a junkie who has fallen deep in debt to his dealer; Gunge's girlfriend, Lisa (Alix Bushnell), is pregnant but uncertain if the man she loves is going to be an especially good father for her child. As Tama's condition takes a turn for the worse, his wife Megan (Sara Wiseman), who works with the police, finds herself at odds with his Maori family about what to do for him. Tama's brother Rick (Jarod Rawiri), is shocked by what's happened to his brother, and feels he must come to terms with a secret that has distanced him from those closest to him. And teenaged Aleki (Jason Wu), a Pacific Islander recently relocated to Auckland, feels like an outcast in his new community and tries to impress a neighborhood girl by swiping a car -- the ride that used to belong to Tama. Matariki was the first feature film from director Michael Bennett.

Set over five days and nights, this fast paced drama is the story of many lives brought into collision by one event. A rugby league star driving past a deserted car parked late at night sees a fight. He intervenes and gets brutally bashed. A young car thief steals the man's apparently abandoned car, and unwittingly starts a chain of events that will change his life and the lives of others forever.

A random act of violence leaves eight people in crisis, searching for hope and new beginnings, as the Matariki constellation (Maori New Year) rises in the Southern skies.
