Synopsis:
Dance Academy is a series about a group of ordinary teenagers who are pushing themselves to the limit as they fight to achieve extraordinary things. When you're sixteen, life is rarely simple. In fact, there's enough to keep you on your toes in normal circumstances. But what if you were also living away from home at the country's top dance academy? Sidney's world-class National Dance Academy holds its annual audition process. Among the hopeful is Christian Reed, who does everything right except not bringing a leotard. Sheep rancher Neil Webster's naive daughter soon discovers she's not nearly as ready as she taught, making a spectacle of herself even when not tricked by her shrewd roommate. Yet natural talent may still make her lifelong ballet-dream come trough.

The audition results are mailed to the candidates' homes. The winners move to the National Academy's Sidney dorm for their first semester. Introdcution week traditionally involves some hosing and hazing, but light-built Samuel Lieberman's greatest concern is a lazy administrator forcing him to become a sassy girl's roommate, although that may also have its advantages when they come to terms.

Newbie Christian is arrested for petty street gang-crime. As his only adult relative, big brother Drew, a Broken Hill miner, won't take him in, academy director Kennedy arranges to save him form juvenile detention by assigning him to the dorm. He even appeals to coolest senior Ethan as his mentor, but neither knave wants that and Ehan catches Christian stealing his wallet. Sam helps Kat making a list with reasons whether to make a pass on Ethan, who just dumped another girlfriend, but Abigal sends copies to everyone/ Sam also works out karaoke may be a cool way to chase horrible roommates. Tara makes a spectacle of herself again when Christain arrives in her class and fears she may never get past the bar exercises stage.

Instructor Patrick assigns the boy-girl dance partners lot-drawn confidence test games as preparation to the technical pas-de-deux course. Although meant to help them bond, they work mainly as truth time tests. Christian's talent impresses, but he intends to quit after his juvenile probation.

Samuel Lieberman fears a single B could cause his dad, third generation of Jewish doctors, may withdraw him from dance academy and send him to med-school. So he's desperate to make it so synagogue in time to act as reader, another condition, but is commandeered for Patrick's coinciding ballet class, which he missed too often already. Christian proves himself the best pupil, but can't handle Patrick's tactile limb position corrections. Dr. Lieberman arrives to discuss withdrawing Sam with director Kennedy.

Sammy finally gets a visit from his home girlfriend since ever Mia, who joined Swedish friends in a kibbutz in Israel. Ethan's ma, famous ballerina Natasha Willis, gives a guest lecture. Kat can't be bothered to spend time with her, but Tara drools and ignores everyone else. Natasha offers Swan Lake tickets with backstage passes, but those actually cause trouble among the kids, especially as Sam accepts to take Abi and lies to Mia the tickets 'fell trough'.

The ballet class naturally doesn't take to obligatory hip-hop lessons, where everything is the other way around, except ever-versatile Christian. Ethan, who has a modern choreography assignment for Mr. Kennedy, picks Christian as star, calling his theft silence-marker. Christian dismisses the project but show Ethan a street group, which inspires a much rougher version. Samuel wrestles with admitting his feelings, risking ridicule like Tara gets even from him, and haughty Kat's claim never to have had a crush.

Christian firmly wards off Sean's taunting off roommate Samuel for wearing regular underwear. Patrick orders them to buy reluctant Sam some dance underwear. His objections are overcome i the fitting-room, where he procrastinates just to give Christia time to flirt with the salesgirl, who ends up giving her phone-number. Ethan tells Tara he can only see her as a kid sister, no dating material. She hopes to cause jealousy by seeming to flirts with pro-dance troop member Damien 'Damo' Lang, but such rumor could ruin both careers.

R&B star Myles Kelly, idolized by most of the kids, picks for a video haughtily uninterested Kat. She only accepts if he modernizes costumes and even choreography, so far the domain of professionals, but it works out so well he even dedicates it to her on TV. Christian works out a basic solution for roommate Sam's basic modesty/privacy problem.

Christia is delighted by a surprise visit from big brother Aaron, although he won't even show knowing him at the academy. The reason is Aaron always got him into trouble, and this time needs Christian to provide a false alibi, which may compromise Christian's spot in the dorm and hence his parole. Couple exercise problems, especially with lifts, cause fear and trouble among some dance class partners, but switches aren't allowed, nor excuses.

Sammy is so relieved, now he can finally commit his hated 'spitzes' (tip toe support footwear) to the sea, that he accepts joining a fun fair party. Ethan gets famous choreographer Dana Strong to coach one of his own creations. Ethan chooses Tara, who inspired it, to dance the solo, but both girls wine he pushes her too hard. She ends up complaining he never cared to know her better, perseveres and is rewarded with a kiss. A visit from Abi's kid sister Paige (11), who has an instant crush on Sammy, wakes flashes of humanity in her, but pride and sibling jealousy get in the way.

It's exam week for both dance classes and academic subjects. Christian quietly relaxes by skateboarding, joined only by Kat as nobody else even dares spare a moment. Kat also commandeers Sam as kissing-dummy for Tara who dares not face Ethan's expert lips as a 'virgin'. Sam patiently complies with Abi's abusive commands to rehearse their pas-de-deux endlessly, spots her dangerously low blood-sugar-level but is stupidly cheated when he poses as condition she should eat something, so anorexia exacts its toll during their exam performance.

After the exams, the families arrive for the results and to take the kids home for the holidays. Christian bonds with Tara's boorish dad over car mechanics. However her ma says the sheep farm is in financial trouble, so she tells dad she wants to quit. Samuel calls her a hypocritical coward, having pushed him to stand up against his dad, who didn't even turn up for his exam solo. Kat expected a luxury holiday with ma, pro ballerina Natasha Karamakov, but that falls trough and she vents her anger during a press interview. A scholarship solves Tara's dilemma.

Anorexic Abi poses as the perfect patient, but therapist Adam sees trough this control-freak-act and insists she must seek satisfaction before he lets her participate in ballet classes again. Sam ultimately gets her to try ballroom-dancing with seniors, which does the trick. Christian, Cat and her hunky date experience non-artistic dance fun in nightlife and just a park.

A stray dog is sneakily 'adopted' into the room by Petra Hoffman, the talented German exchange student who takes Abi's place during her therapy. Although the next semester started, Kat remains in holiday mood and is seen dating and kissing in public. Rather then trying pointless punishments, director Kennedy assigns her to assist graduate Gus's program to tech young kids dancing. She gets committed and promises to take them to a TV show. Looking for the dog with the gang makes her be late and dumped. Tara is finally allowed to dance on 'spitzes', but the unexpected pain makes her bitch even at Christian while they are allowed to dance Romeo and Juliette in Ethan's show-reel.

Kat's parents buy off missing her birthday, so she decides to throw a massive party. She gets drunk worse then unsuspecting foreigner Petra and has to be rescued in the bedroom from slick Lucas by Christian. Tara misses it because her lack of confidence and fear of injuries during scholarship-conditional private tutoring takes forever.

Everyone is punished for Kat's irresponsible party. Poor Sam has to mentor Abi's make-up Englis essay. Suspicious of her help refusal, he discovers she clumsily stole a paper from the Internet and makes her write a real one, using cleverly faked jealousy. Patrick takes the others camping in the outback to rehearse a Midsummer Night's Dream production. The picture of Tara's kissing infidelity is spread all around, apparently by jealous Kat but actually by her devoted lover Sean, causing much havoc. Petra forces them to make up by facing the naked facts in the buff.

Ever-helpful Samuel hoped getting an kissing terms meant he finally earned ingrate bitch Abi's respectful appreciation, but she refuses to let anyone know about their 'meaningless non-affair'. The makes him receptive to seduction from Petra, but despite a desire to 'be a real teenager' abroad she ends up accepting a Berlin company contract. Christian reluctantly helps out in the summer program for young outside would be-dancers, where scheming snake Abi wasn't accepted but intrudes by dirty tricks.

The Academy welcomes jocks from an all-boys sports school, so the pupils can exchange physical training approaches. They actually scold each-other sissies, so when Mr. Patrick orders them to solve it some way they agree on a double dare: the dancers must score at an Aussie football game, the jocks perform a cossack dance. Sammy refuses to keep his affair with Abi secret now Tara's proves that doesn't harm career prospects, but she claims kisses mean nothing and proves it on an unsuspecting jock's lips, with a kinky twist in his apparent enamoring, while his mate Ollie convinces Kat to coach his clueless team's dance.
Season 1, Episode 20: Boardroom Warfare

The academy's board meeting is to be treated to pupils performances of the highest standard. Even as lover, Sammy still gets no sympathy from Abi although he didn't get a solo part. Christian convinced Tara she's becoming as dance-obsessed as Abi and dares her to prove she can still have fun. Playing all over Sdney, they are late for the performance and run, which ends with Tara making a bad fall. Kat spearheads the juvenile protest against all non-classical dance styles being removed from the program, but wrongly assumed her ma Natasha supported such move.

Ethan can't bring himself to sign the 5 year National Ballet contract, which would suspend his choreographic ambitions. Looking for Christian and talking sense into hie mate, Sammy missed a picnic with ingrate Abi, who calls that cause for a break-up, and the alternative hip-hop class rebel Kat organizes.
Season 1, Episode 23: Best Friends Forever

Just when Christian despairs about his upcoming trial, Aaron reappears and promises to tell he's the main culprit, so Christian should get off with a suspended sentence. Realizing this would mean a long juvenile sentence for his mate, whom he feels obliged to as the only one who helped him after his ma's death, Christian intends to take the major blame, hoping for a lenient judge. Staff, attorney and Sammy try to talk him over. Ethan goes on a picnic with Tara, where they find out neither of them invited, Kat did. Ethan tells everyone he remains in the academy as his Barcelona dream company rejected his choreography project.
Season 1, Episode 24: Heatwave

Sammy enjoys his first-ever close friendship with grateful roommate Christian, but a possible reconciliation with Tara worries him. While all Sidney suffers a heatwave, preparations for the annual public performance must go on. Patrick treats everyone to a pool-class before the auditions. Ethan's famous pa Sebastian Karamakov comes direct it and tells Ethan he shouldn't have refused a professional contract but gives the boy a shot as pa's personal assistant.

Sammy is so annoyed by his feelings for Christian that he pretends his snob father is the one who refuses to accept a summer stay-over. Christian finds out in stages, but only insists not to be dumped as friend and roommate by the only person who ever stuck with him so loyally. Ethan has a hard time as pa's assistant choreographer, or is it glorified gopher. Tara's insecurity and wining cost her the Clara part is Sebastian Karamakov's Nutcracker, so understudy Abi gets the lead. Kat now completely neglects dancing and accepts to tour Australia with rock singer-friend Myles Kelly.
Season 1, Episode 26: Learning to Fly: Part 2

Christian patiently keeps Sammy's secret, hoping for restored best buddies status, while pointing out a hunky outside dancer as possible gayness test. Sammy has more pressing worries: pa cancels his Academy fee. Ethan toughs it out as director pa's assistant and prevails to save Tara's lead is his Nurcracker, even Abi backs off after hiding the legacy dress Tara childishly assumes to 'need to shine'. Myles makes Kat delay their departure to attend the performance and say goodbye properly.

At Sydney's National Dance Academy, a few talented youngsters are recruited for the excruciatingly tough course. Jewish long line of doctors' heir Samuel 'Sammy' and minor juvenile offender Christian are the outsiders but gradually fit in, making new kinds of friends. Star ballerina's daughter Kat also introduces them in the circle of last-year brother Ethan, who already aspires a career as choreographer.
