Synopsis:
***WARNING***Films contain original language audio with English, Spanish & French subtitles***
From the East (1993)
D'est: Au bord de la fiction is a collection of striking images of Eastern Europe and its citizens in the transition period following the end of the Cold War. Multiple video monitors retrace a journey that extends from the end of summer to the deepest winter, from East Germany, across Poland and the Baltics, to Moscow.

South (1999)
Sud initially began as a 'meditation on the American South' inspired by Akerman's love for the work of writers William Faulkner and James Baldwin. The direction of Akerman's film quickly shifted after the racially motivated murder of James Byrd Jr. in Jasper, Texas.

From the Other Side (2002)
De l'autre côté is an unsentimental look at the plight of illegal Mexican immigrants as they attempt the dangerous crossing from Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico to Douglas, Arizona.

Over There (2006)
In Là-bas Akerman approached a subject directly linked to her own history. Although Akerman did not want to make a film in Israel, convinced that neutrality would be impossible and that her own subjectivity would interfere, she found herself shooting Là-bas while teaching and living in Tel Aviv. Akerman's film evolves from the confines of her apartment.

From the East (1993)
This experimental documentary is a compendium of striking images of Eastern Europe and its citizens in transition, following the collapse of the so-called Cold War. Places as diverse as Baltic beaches, and Moscow's snow-covered streets vie for attention along with the citizens of these places as they wait in lines, march in military formation, or stand idle in the waiting rooms of train stations. There is no narration, and no clear point (except the idea of transitions) is indicated by the beautifully chosen, enigmatic imagery. Indeed, there is not even much musical accompaniment. Fans of director Chantal Akerman's aggressively 'non-commercial' work are likelier to find this film more appealing than the average viewer will.

South (1999)
Documentary filmmaker Chantal Akerman traveled to the American South to make a film on life in the land that informed and influenced William Faulkner and James Baldwin, but shortly after she arrived, a shocking story began to dominate the headlines. In Jasper, Texas, James Byrd Jr., an African-American man, was brutally beaten by three white men, and then chained to the back of a truck and dragged three miles to his death. The focus of Akerman's film shifted dramatically, and Sud/South explores the reactions of people in Jasper to the this heinous crime, ranging from an emotional memorial service at a black church to a local lawman who wants people to know race is not a problem in Jasper, at least not compared to the economy. The film also looks into the actions of organized hate groups and the impact racism has had on this community in the past. Sud/South was shown as part of the Directors Fortnight series at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.

From the Other Side (2002)
A documentary look at the fate of Mexicans who cross the border into the United States.

Over There (2006)
The film starts and ends inside someone's empty living room, respecting the rules of dramatic unity (one space, one time, one action). A precautionary look at what's happening outside. The shots are always static and patiently pursued in long takes. If the framing is artisticaly composed, it lets however the audience's gaze wander around and select our own acumen. Little action animates this quiet scrutiny of the neighborhood, from various angles, through the straw-screens. A textured curtain of proximity and disconnection. Lacking any hint of a narrative subject, these silent images denounce the passivity and voyeurism of a cinema viewer, which strangely echos the filmmaker's own state of mind in Israel.

There is no narration and the film unfolds as a procession of beautifully chosen, enigmatic images in which Akerman captures the essence, if not the historical particulars, of a region on the move.

Byrd, a black man, was killed by three whites who chained him to their truck and dragged him three miles through predominantly black parts of the county until one of his arms came off and he was decapitated. What began as an elegant meditation on the South became a passionate documentary capturing the emotionally tumultuous aftermath of Byrd's murder.

From the Other Side (2002)
De l'autre côté is an unsentimental look at the plight of illegal Mexican immigrants as they attempt the dangerous crossing from Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico to Douglas, Arizona. Akerman approaches the documentary from an unobtrusive and objective standpoint evident from the lack of an omniscient narrator and the long camera angles and takes that capture miles of dividing fence along the Mexico-Arizona border.

In the film we rarely see Akerman; she leaves her apartment only for the occasional visit to the shore. Voice-over narration serves as the framework for her reflections on family history, her Jewish identity, and her childhood. She wonders whether normal everyday life is possible in this place and whether filming is a realistic option. With no intentions defined in advance, the film takes its natural course.
