Synopsis:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs meets Jacques Rivette's Céline and Julie Go Boating in Miguel's Gomes's striking first feature, a two-part musical-cum-magic-realist puzzle box. The film begins with an epigram: 'Up to your 30s, you have the face God has given you. After that you get the face you deserve.' A prelude then tells of sullen, snarly Francisco, a children's entertainer who's turning 30 and having a hard time of it. He's also more than a little childish himself. A drastic narrative shift takes us to the film's second part (Francisco's measles-fever dream?), a Lord of the Flies-like fairytale in which seven grown men, inhabiting a cottage in the woods, live their lives according to a set of childish rules and ritual games. A wry, deadpan, deeply strange work, gorgeously shot and composed, The Face You Deserve has 'unique energy and puckish charm'.

Francisco, behave! I Know it's your birthday, you are thirty now, it's carnival, you've dressed as a cowboy for the school party and you are surrounded by kids you hate. But that's no reason to be so annoying... Francisco, repeat after me: 'Up to your 30's you have the face God has given you. After that, you get the face you deserve'.
