Presents a history of a book that, to over a billion people worldwide, is the inspired word of God. While many people outside of the Muslim faith view the Koran as a book that inspires mass killings and forces women into a subservient and a humiliating life, many Muslims point out that the Koran (recitation) is simply misunderstood and exploited by a few fanatics. This series goes beyond the headlines over the past few years and explores the history of a faith that was started by one man. In the year 610 AD while resting in a cave located in Mecca, Muhammad, an Arab merchant, was visited by the Angel Gabriel. At first Muhammad believed he was possessed but soon realized that the Angel was instructing him to share the word of God. Over the next 23 years Muhammad shared his revelation to family and friends but over time he would have a following that spread over the entire planet and has become a source of inspiration. Muhammad believed he was God's prophet to the Arab people and since the Jewish people and Christians already had a revelation from God it was time for the Arab people to receive theirs. Muhammad never wrote down his teachings and it was not until after his death that the Koran was put together in a book (632 AD.) The Koran consists of 114 surah (chapters) with a total of 6236 verses and is sorted by lengh (longest verses first). It is also meant to be read aloud.
