Synopsis:
A factual drama telling the remarkable, but little known story of George Best's relationship with his alcoholic mother. The film will have a tragicomic tone and focus on Best's year long retirement from football aged 26. A year in which Best decided he was going to enjoy himself. Sod Manchester United. Sod football. Sod everyone and everything except himself. But the harder Best tries to establish himself in the life of a Soho dandy, the more surprised he is to find himself pulled back to his raw Belfast roots. George is trying to concentrate on dating three Miss Worlds at the same time and building up his collection of night-clubs and sports cars when he discovers his formerly tee-total 'mam' has taken to heavy drinking. And he thinks it's all his fault... Through the course of this 90 minute film the black farce of Best's life - his carousing, his evasion of those trying to save him or lure him back to football, his stumbling into the politics of Northern Ireland - will be counter-pointed by the tragedy of his mother's slow death from alcoholism. Until finally Best gives up on hedonism and puts on his boots again... only to discover his genius has gone. The Bests will be an unfamiliar telling of a very familiar story. It will capture Best at a point where his future, his mother's future and the future of Belfast are all hanging in the balance. It's the forgotten year of the George Best legend but it may just be the most important.

Best: His Mother's Son is a 2009 drama television film that chronicles the life of the late footballer George Best's mother, Ann, and her battles against alcoholism that would ultimately lead to her death at the age of 54. Best: His Mother's Son was filmed at County Antrim and Belfast in Northern Ireland, the country where George Best was born in 1946. It starred Tom Payne as the title character, with Michelle Fairley playing his mother Ann and Lorcan Cranitch appearing as his father Dickie. Des McAleer was also featured as the Manchester United manager during George's playing career, Matt Busby.
