Synopsis:
Akira Kurosawa, one of the cinema s greatest auteurs, has wowed audiences and inspired filmmakers as diverse as George Lucas and Sergio Leone. This highly collectable 4-disc box set highlights his mastery of the crime genre bringing together four of his finest thrillers. Included here is the yakuza gangster drama Drunken Angel (1948); the atmospheric police thriller Stray Dog (1949); the tale of corporate greed and corruption, The Bad Sleep Well (1947); and the gripping Ed Mcbain adaptation High and Low (1963).

Drunken Angel (1948)
In the post-war WWII Tokyo, the Yakuza gangster Matsunaga seeks the alcoholic Doctor Sanada to remove a bullet from his hand, and he warns Matsunaga that he has tuberculosis and needs treatment. The bully Matsunaga keeps his arrogant position of tough Yakuza leader in a troubled relationship with Dr. Sanada, but follows his recommendation and stops drinking and smoking. When the former boss Okada is released from prison, Matsunaga starts drinking and smoking again with his Okada and his illness worsens. Later Okada threatens Dr. Sanada and his nurse Miyo and Matsunaga decides to meets the Yakuza boss invoking their code of honor to help the physician; however, he finds that he is expendable in the underworld where he once ruled.

Stray Dog (1949)
Murukami, a young homicide detective, has his pocket picked on a bus and loses his pistol. Frantic and ashamed, he dashes about trying to recover the weapon without success until taken under the wing of an older and wiser detective, Sato. Together they track the culprit.

The Bad Sleep Well (1960)
In Kurosawa's HAMLET-like story of corporate scandal in post-war Japan, a young man attempts to use his position at the heart of a corrupt company to expose the men responsible for his father's death.

High and Low (1963)
Caught in a corporate war with other executives in his company, National Shoe, Kingo Gondo (Toshiro Mifune) mortgages all he has and decides to purchase a majority of the stock to gain control and maintain quality of the product. As he begins to finalize the deal he is contacted by a kidnapper who claims to have his son, so he makes immediate plans to cancel his takeover and send the money as ransom. When he realizes that the kidnappers have taken the son of his chauffeur, Gondo changes his mind realizing that paying the money would bankrupt him. Police Inspector Tokura (Tatsuya Nakadai) and others convince Gondo to pay the ransom and that the money will be recovered in order for him to continue his business deal. As the money is paid and the boy returned, the police begin a thorough investigation that leads them to dead drug addicts and various underworld criminals in their search for the kidnapper.

Hud (1963)
Hud Bannon is a ruthless young man who tarnishes everything and everyone he touches. Hud represents the perfect embodiment of alienated youth, out for kicks with no regard for the consequences. There is bitter conflict between the callous Hud and his stern and highly principled father, Homer. Hud's nephew Lon admires Hud's cheating ways, though he soon becomes aware of Hud's reckless amorality to bear him anymore. In the world of the takers and the taken, Hud is a winner. He's a cheat, but, he explains 'I always say the law was meant to be interpreted in a lenient manner.'

Twilight (1998)
A retired ex-cop and private detective (Newman) who lives with a rich actor (Hackman) who is dying from cancer and his actress wife (Sarandon) gets mixed up in murder when he is asked to deliver blackmail money. He walks into a 20 year old case involving the mysterious disappearance of the actress's former husband. James Garner appears as another ex-cop who also does occasional errands for the couple.

Shadow Makers (1989)
In real life, Robert Oppenheimer was the scientific head of the Manhattan Project, the secret wartime project in New Mexico where the first atomic bombs were designed and built. General Leslie Groves was in overall command of it. This film reenacts the project with an emphasis on their relationship.
